COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State opened the spring 2026 season in emphatic fashion, running in eight tries to blow past Illinois 48-5 at Lincoln Tower Fields.

From the opening whistle, the Buckeyes controlled possession and territory, using their forward pack to establish dominance at the breakdown before unleashing the backs in space. The home side scored early and often, building a commanding halftime lead that was never in doubt.

The victory was a statement of intent for a squad looking to make a deep run in the CRAA Challenger Cup this spring. With several young players stepping into expanded roles, the performance showed both the depth and development that Head Coach Tom Rooney has been building throughout the program.

Illinois managed a consolation try late in the second half, but the result was long decided by that point. Ohio State's defense was stifling for the majority of the contest, limiting the Illini to minimal attacking opportunities.

The Buckeyes travel to Charlotte, NC the following weekend for the Pathway Classic, where they'll face Queens University — a tough test against a quality opponent on the road.
